A Lasting Sign…..

The iconic Las Vegas sign (pictured here) is nearly 60 years old. Other famous signs have come and gone in a city that never stands still, but this sign is still there and still loved, evoking the spirit of Las Vegas across the decades: over-the-top, fun, exciting. Its bright lights make it stand out during the city ‘s famous night-life, and have helped make it the visual shorthand for Las Vegas.Designed by the late Betty Willis, it was inspired by two instantly recognisable logos that have also stood the test of time. These were the Goodyear and Disneyland branding logos. The shape of the sign is typical of the jazzy modernism of Las Vegas ‘s signage and buildings in the 1950s. The word  œfabulous  was later added by Willis, using lettering that recalled local hand-painted signage (Walker, 2015).

The sign was an instant hit. Even now, decades later, it is a definitive symbol of the city where the world goes to party, pausing only to take a selfie in front of the sign.
