Print Finishing. Why is it important?

After all the effort that goes into designing your print job, it rolls off the press looking gorgeous. It may be able to get even better, though, with the right print finishing.

Die cutting

You could choose to put your project through die-cutting, which essentially works like a cookie-cutter, cutting the paper into your desired shape, whether that ‘s curved corners on your business cards or a perforated detachment on your invoices.

Lamination

This adds a layer of protective coating, either glossy or matt, to the printed surface. This improves the sturdiness of the product and also the water resistance. This is a great option for packaging, which not only needs to look good but be robust as well.

Print Varnishing

Gloss varnishing gives a shiny coating to your product. This will heighten the impact of the colours or photographs on the page.   A matt varnish gives a much smoother look that doesn ‘t reflect light. This will make your product easier to view in brightly lit areas. Finally, there is silk varnish, which sits between gloss and matt.

Spot UV Varnish

This is the targeted application of a varnish which is then cured under a UV light, giving it a high shine finish. This finish brings vibrancy to the highlighted areas and an ethereal quality as the varnished elements catch the light.

Embossing and Debossing

Embossing  is when you raise a logo or other image to create a 3D graphic. The raised area can then have ink or foil applied to it for added effect or it can be left unprinted or unfoiled (known as a blind emboss).

Debossing  is similar, only pushed into the paper rather than standing out from it, and again you can choose whether to print it or leave it blind.
